Waqf Amendment Bill is a draconian move by the Central Government

by | Aug 8, 2024

SIO strongly condemns the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill as an alarming and draconian move by the central government that strikes at the very heart of constitutional freedoms. By seeking to interfere in Waqf properties— which are inherently private and self-acquired by the Muslim community— the government is not only overstepping its bounds but also blatantly violating Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution, which guarantee the freedom to practice and manage religious affairs without state intrusion.

This amendment is a direct assault on the rights of religious minorities and a dangerous encroachment on the federal structure of our nation. It is a chilling reminder of how religion-centric legislation can be wielded as a tool to undermine the fundamental rights of vulnerable communities. The inclusion of district collectors and non-Muslims in the management of Waqf properties is an affront to the principles of religious autonomy and a grave threat to the secular fabric of our democracy. SIO demands this bill must be opposed and rejected in the strongest possible terms.
