The destruction of Vellivada by the University of Hyderabad administration led by Podile Apparao was intended to stop the struggle of Dalit, Bahujan, Muslim and backward students in University of Hyderabad. Vellivada emerged as the epicenter of student politics in the wake of a powerful protest against institutional discrimination by five Dalit scholars, including Rohith Vemula, in December 2015. Its destruction is the latest in a series of atrocious activities by the administration to counter this historic students resistance spearheaded by Dalit, Bahujan and Muslim students

“The act of removing Vellivada represents not only the removal of a protest site but the deliberate cleansing of a prominent space for anti-caste resistance” said Labeed Aliya (President, SIO of India).

The removal of the portraits of Dr.B.R Ambedkar, Ramabai Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, Chatrapathi Shahuji Maharaj, Komaram Bheem, Gurram Jashua, Periyar E.V Ramaswamy, and Manywar Kanshiram from Vellivada was a serious offence under section 3(t) of the SC/ST prevention of atrocities act. SIO demands action according to law against the UoH Administration who defiled and destroyed the portraits of esteemed members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. SIO also demands the rebuilding of Vellivada in the same place, Labeed Shafi further added.
