A Step Towards Change…

Chennai: March 03, In the shocking post-murder situation, where a school teacher was brutally killed by her own student inside the class room here, SIO Tamil Nadu zone conducted a ‘Brainstorming discussion on Role of Media, Parenting and Education system. A step towards change’ at the heart of the city, World University Service Center. The program started with the recitation of verses from Suratul Alaq and its meaning by Br.Siraj ul hasan, SIO Chennai city president. It was followed by the presidential address by Br. Noorul Hasan. He pointed out the faults in the Indian education system and stressed the need for reforms. He argued against judging students by ranking and showing blind-eye towards the humanities and law courses. While delivering felicitation address, the Zonal Patron Jb. Shabbir Ahmed sb expressed shock over the incident and asked for moral upliftment of students for a better society.

Eminent persons like Mr. Rangaraj Pandey (Chief reporter – Dinamalar, Tamil Daily) and Dr. K.V.S. Habeeb Mohamed (Vice President – IFT) gave guest lectures. In his speech, Mr. Pandey said that the media alone can’t be responsible for all the social evils. He urged the parents to spend some time with their children daily and asked them to teach their children how to use the Internet, social networking sites and other electronic devices beneficially.

Dr. K.V.S. Habeeb Mohamed briefly discussed the issue and appreciated SIO for its continuous efforts. He said that the Government should somehow control the media from showing the obscene and violent scenes. Otherwise the results would be dangerous. ‘The attitude of the students has been changing in past years from simple fights to murder, rape, etc. The media, Parenting  and the education system cannot deny their share’ he said. By pointing to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report of 1996, in India, he said that the 53 percent of the crimes were done by persons of 16-31 years of age. They became criminals due to ‘the absentee Parents’ and ‘the Pampering Parents’.

Dr. K.V.S emphasized on using the Moral classes effectively without making it a mockery. Giving example of World wars and its message, he asked the government to include the moral values in the syllabus wherever possible.
