Students' Parliament by SIO Karnataka

“Indian political system has become paralyzed and needs serious overhauling, students must engage in politics but should not resort to politicking”, said Ramesh Kumar, Senior political leader and MLA from Srinivaspura constituency, while addressing students at Students’ Parliament held at Legislatures Home in Bangalore on Saturday, 15th Feb 2014. The programme was organised by Students Islamic Organisation of India, Karnataka zone to discuss and deliberate on current educational scenario and other youth issues. With representatives from various political parties, the programme had participants from across the state and from various backgrounds.

Further discussing on various issues, Mr. Kumar urged the students and youth to come forward and seriously engage in discussions and consultation process with political parties and Government. Criticising the current political system, he admitted that our political and educational systems are being controlled by capitalists for their vested interests.

Delivering key note address, Mr Touseef Ahmed, State President SIO Karnataka criticised the current political and educational scenario. Giving references of recent surveys, he told that by 2020 Hindustan would become Youngistan with national average age being 29 and emphasised on the need of conducting such discussions and deliberations at district level. Doing this, he said, would give a sense of belongingness and participation among students and youth.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Javed Azam, State working committee member of Social Democratic Party of India emphasised on students participation in democratic processes. Expressing his pleasure over conducting such a session, Mr. Akbar Ali, State President of Welfare Party of India congratulated SIO for taking up the task of bridging the gap between campus and society.

Issues ranging from RTE to communalisation and youth unemployment were discussed in the well-attended session. The summary of discussion would be compiled and submitted to political parties said the organisers. The programme was moderated by Dr. Chandrashekhar Ijoor, researcher at National Law School (NLSIU).
