SIO to file public interest litigation over Urdu textbooks

PUNE: The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO), which has been spearheading the cause of making Std X and XII textbooks available to the students of Urdu medium high school, is planning to file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay high court soon.

“We will wait for the government’s response for a reasonable time before moving the court as the issue concerns several thousand students of Urdu high schools,” said Mohammad Ali, an SIO office bearer, here on Thursday.

A delegation of the SIO called on the minister for school education Rajendra Darda in Mumbai on Wednesday and apprised him about the problem. They also handed over a representation to the minister highlighting the issue and seeking apt response from the government.

Ali said, “The Maharashtra state board for secondary and higher secondary education has been providing textbooks for the optional subjects in arts, science and commerce streams from Std X to XII since the year 2010-11. However, this facility is not available to the Urdu medium students as they do not get textbooks translated in Urdu language.”

He said, “In the absence of such facility, the students have to rely on textbooks prepared in English and Marathi languages. This causes problems to those students who are not familiar with these languages.”

Ali said, “There are a total of 168 Urdu medium junior colleges and high schools and each year more than 20,000 Urdu medium students appear for the board exam.”

On January 3, an SIO delegation had called on the board chairman Sarjerao Jadhav in Pune. “We were assured of some position action but, no action has been taken so far,” said Ali.
