SIO of India condemns the authoritarian de-recognition of APSC by IIT Madras

Mr. Iqbal Hussain, President Students Islamic Organisation of India condemns the way authorities of IIT Madras have de-recognised Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle in the campus. According to the students, they were not given any opportunity by the Dean of the Students on this regard to present their stand. Matter of grave concern is also the involvement of MHRD on the internal affairs of the autonomous institution like IIT. It’s wide open now that the IIT Madras has taken this undemocratic and authoritarian decision to de-recognise the student body at the behest of the MHRD.

SIO of India sees this action of the authorities as the clear attempt to stifle and throttle the voices of the dissent. Dissents are important in a democracy as it gives way to the innovation of new ideas and make people aware of the pros and cons of the everything which is in the public sphere. This is a completely unwelcome move by the institution and the unwarranted interference of MHRD into the students’ affairs at the autonomous institution. Students have every right to debate and discuss the policies and moves of the government in power and that’s what the students of APSC were doing. They were critical of the Modi government and that has made the MHRD upset.

SIO of India expresses its solidarity with the members of APSC at IIT Madras and strongly demands the IIT Madras authorities to revoke the undemocratic orders of the de-recognition. SIO also urges MHRD to not interfere into the student affairs of the debates and discussions in the democratic frameworks. SIO also urges the students across the country to participate in the healthy democratic debates and discussions which is inevitable for the democratic country to keep the inflows of ideas running for the functioning of the democracy.
