The students gathered near Botanical Garden and raised slogans and a mass meeting was held. The protest placards displayed slogans such as `fee hike at no cost’, Academic Councils circular get lost’, `education is our basic right’, `kick out attempts to fee hike’, etc. The centre of attraction at the demonstration was the ‘Dummy Suicide’ of a student who held a placard that read, ‘I quit due to fee hike’.
Academic Council’s circular dated 2 February 2010 has asked university and its affiliated colleges a to implement the recent decision of the council to hike the fees of various under-graduate and post-graduate courses. It has come to our knowledge that the fees of various courses has been raised by over 100 percent. We fear that this particular decision would affect the chances of the poor students and the students with a rural background of getting higher education.
“This is not just a shameful blueprint to deny access of quality education to millions of common students, but also an attempt to snatch away whatever little access that exists today. It is a direct attempt to commercialize existing public-funded higher education institutes,” said PR Secretary Adil Syed SIO MS ZONE.
SIO Maharashtra South Zone, secretary Moiz ur Rahman and Syed Taufeeq of SIO Aurangabad also expressed their views.
SIO Maharashtra South Zone PR Secretary Syed Adil, Aurangabad City President Shaikh Mohsin later submitted a memorandum to SJ Pathak, a representative of the vice chancellor demanding an immediate withdrawal of the circular. Responding the queries of SIO, Mr Pathak said that a meeting of the academic council has been convened on 15th February to discuss the issue and hopefully the issue would be resolved.
