With major chunk of money apportioned for development of education in the State budget going towards payment of teachers’ salaries, hardly any is left for improving the status of education, rued experts.

Addressing the session on — Education in Assemly — under the aegis of The Student Islamic Organisation of India, Karnataka, National Law School Research Fellow Niranjan Aradhya said 90 per cent of money allocated for education goes towards meeting monthly salaries of teachers with a mere 10 per cent left for development of schools or improving quality of education.

Observing that not even once was there a discussion on either Right to Education or providing free and qualitative education in the Assembly, Aradhya said the number of students enrolling in government schools has gone down in the past two years (because of implementation of RTE), as a result of which most schools are shut.

Two students from SIO, Riyaph and Tahla, who visited the assembly during the budget session, compiled the information gathered in the form of 600 pages book titled ‘Education in Assembly’.
